Dear Leader,
A friend of mine recently posed a challenging, thought-provoking question: “Aren’t positive and empathetic leaders really just doormat leaders?”
He elaborated, “Aren’t they the kind of people who bend too easily, always putting others first, and sacrificing their own goals and happiness?”
My response was measured yet optimistic, “Yes, it’s possible, but let’s delve deeper.”
(Pay close attention: what I shared with my friend—and now with you—might change your perspective on leadership.)
You see, the crux of the issue isn’t positivity or empathy. It’s our values getting scrambled. It’s prioritising ‘sacrifice’ when we should be prioritising ‘caring’. Charge Ahead leaders don’t make that mistake. Here’s why:
Sacrifice vs. Caring: A Comparison
When leaders prioritise ‘sacrifice’, they may go to any length for their team, even to the detriment of the project or their own well-being. Conversely, leaders who prioritise ‘caring’ place equal importance on their well-being as they do on their team’s. This approach avoids the pitfalls of becoming a sacrificial leader, one who, driven by twisted values, ends up drained and ineffective.
Positive and empathetic leadership does not equate to weakness. On the contrary, it embodies:
Saying no when necessary
Prioritising what’s right over what’s popular
Focusing on sustainable strategies over quick wins
A Guiding Light
Let’s not confuse positivity and empathy with weakness. Instead, let’s embrace a leadership style that is kind, firm, and sustainable. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” However, this service should not come at the expense of our own well-being.
Reflection and Action
This weekend, take a moment to reflect on how you’re prioritising your own well-being in your leadership journey. It’s a question no one else on your team might ask, but I’m asking because I’m here for you, and I want you to win.
Start Simple: Identify one activity that rejuvenates you and schedule it into your week. This small step can have a profound impact on your ability to lead with energy and empathy.
Let’s keep charging ahead, together.
Warmly,
Andrew
